BreederCloud Pro alternatives: what actually differs, and when switching is worth it

Why breeders go looking for an alternative

In practice there are only four reasons anyone shops around, and three of them have nothing to do with software quality.

The first is cost at small scale. BreederCloud Pro runs a 30-day trial but no permanently free tier, so a hobby breeder with two queens pays the same monthly fee as one with nine. If you produce one or two litters a year, a subscription can cost more than the record-keeping saves.

The second is the device you actually work on. Whelping box, vet visit, weighing a fading kitten at 3am — that is phone work, standing up, one-handed. Web-first tools are excellent at the desk and awkward at the box.

The third is species. Reptile and bird breeders keep clutches, not litters: eggs laid, fertile count, incubation temperature and humidity, hatch window. That is a different record model, not a renamed one, and mammal-oriented software cannot express it.

The fourth, and the only one that is a genuine product judgement, is that you have hit a wall on a specific capability — pedigree depth, COI, contracts, buyer portal. Be precise about which one before you move; migration always costs more than it looks.

Where each one is the weaker choice

This is the section worth reading twice, because it is the one that decides the question for most people.

Pick by situation, not by feature count

• You breed horses, goats, rabbits or sheep — stay with BreederCloud Pro. Cattery Manager does not cover those species at all.
• More than one person enters records — stay with BreederCloud Pro. Multiple user access is included in both its tiers; Cattery Manager is single-account.
• You need buyers to sign contracts inside the tool — stay with BreederCloud Pro. We generate contracts and receipts but do not handle e-signature.
• One or two litters a year and a subscription is hard to justify — a free tier changes the maths. Try Cattery Manager before paying for anything.
• You work from your phone at the whelping box more than at a desk — native apps are a genuinely different experience from a responsive website.
• You breed reptiles or birds — clutch and incubation records exist in Cattery Manager and do not exist in mammal-oriented software.
• You mainly want COI before committing to a pairing — try the free calculator first. It needs no account, and it will tell you within a minute whether the maths matches what you expected.

Before you migrate anything

Do not move the whole archive. Move the animals you are actively breeding plus their direct ancestors — that is what pedigree depth and COI calculations run on, and it is usually a fraction of the total. Sold kittens and retired animals can follow later, or never.

Check the export path out of the new tool before you commit to it, not after. Pedigree data is a decade of work; a tool you cannot leave is a worse risk than a tool that lacks a feature.

Run both in parallel for one cycle. A heat-to-weaning cycle is the honest test — it exercises heat logging, mating records, due-date projection, whelping, weights and vaccinations in the order you actually use them. Feature lists never reveal what a daily workflow does.

Finally, verify the COI figures against something you already know. Pair two full siblings and confirm the tool returns 25%; a half-sibling pairing should return 12.5%. If a tool disagrees with those, its pedigree traversal is wrong and nothing else it reports can be trusted.
